Freelancers are required to report and pay taxes by the end of July, most of them also pay pension insurance

There are still ten days left for freelancers to report and pay taxes via "freelancer", a special portal of the Tax Administration. Irena Đorđević, a guest on RTS's Morning Program, said that about a thousand freelancers filed their tax returns in about twenty days.

"That is the expected number of applications. For the first time, a system is being established for freelancers to report taxes themselves. It is their responsibility to report their income legally. We hope that the number will be higher," says Đorđević.

Freelance jobs

According to her, about 60 percent of freelancers choose to pay contributions for pension insurance through the portal. "There is no accurate record of what kind of work they do, but according to research, most of them are programmers, web designers or teach foreign languages..." says Đorđević.

He also points out that freelancers are not only those whose employers are foreigners, but that they also work for domestic individuals. Đorđević also explains that freelancers can opt for one of two models through the portal, with certain benefits.

"The first model is profitable in the financial sense - 160,000 dinars, and it will have health insurance coverage, but that does not count as years of service. The second model, in the financial sense, is more expensive, but you get a pension. Profitability is relative," says Đorđević.

Starting the application

Đorđević points out that before submitting the tax return, freelancers should apply for social insurance through the PIO fund.

"If they do not submit it within the deadline, they can subsequently submit an untimely application. If they do not report the tax even then, the Tax Administration control starts the procedure, which means that the freelancer will also pay interest", concludes Irena Đorđević from NALED.
